Idle Worship(2024)

Idle Worship is a group show curated by Dylan Teaford which presents a varied perspective on the myths being born today. Subject matter is pulled from fractured moments of faith, depression, and ecstasy which become amplified through digital culture. Distance from the viewer is always a factor, from intimate, nostalgic work to broader ambivalent gestures, the works push and pull on the hem of what it means to consume and participate in mass media. Digital culture has turned the media content that fills our lives into a churning, overwhelming sea.
The artists in the show all embrace this reality in ways ranging from satirical to empathetic; they capture different vantage points while fully acknowledging the outsized presence the movement of images has on our ability to connect. At the core of Idle Worship is a tension between the ups and downs of digital existence, sometimes excruciating and other times deeply comforting. The ways we see and live have been fundamentally altered by the experience of being online, often in ways that are obscured by the speed at which culture moves. Idle Worship slows down some of these experiences and examine how they speak to the lives lived around them: what it was like growing up alongside (and on) the internet and how we see the world as a result. Inundated with images, symbols, text, and culture, we have become worshippers of everything. Idle Worship illuminates the symbol fatigue of everyday life.
